Elly Xin Pei and Manfred Tan
Elly and Manfred said their ‘I Do’s’ on 2 March 2014
If Elly and Manfred lived in a romantic film, the moment they first laid eyes on each other, sparks would have flown and they would have left an indelible mark in each other’s minds. Real life, however, was not quite as romantic: the night they first met, they simply exchanged pleasantries as Elly gave Manfred a door gift for the company D&D event they were attending, and though she caught his attention, it didn’t cross his mind that they were in fact destined to share their lives together.
Over the years, they would continue to pass by each other, but never quite connected until it was almost too late and Elly was set to leave the company to care for her mum. In her penultimate day at work, Manfred attended her training program class – it was, incidentally, his first and last day to attend the lessons before becoming a reservist – and they finally took notice of each other. Elly thought Manfred was very funny, while he found her to be a nice lady. In the next two months, they kept in touch with each other though SMS and Facebook, until eventually Manfred took Elly as his date in his best friend’s wedding and the two finally knew they were meant for each other.
For their 8th month anniversary, and just two days before Elly’s birthday, Manfred took her to lunch at ION Orchard’s Salt Grill & Sky Bar. That day, Elly had the sweetest dessert in her life as, that day, hers was served on a plate with the line “Will you marry me?”
Manfred then handed her a bouquet and asked her personally if she would marry him. Shocked and still overwhelmed with emotions, Elly was unable to answer and Manfred actually started to panic. Finally, Elly nodded her agreement and indicated for Manfred to put the engagement ring on her finger. And as he did so, the waiters and other patrons filled the restaurant with cheers and clapping.
For their wedding, Elly and Manfred wanted an elegant celebration with an enchanting fairy tale atmosphere. In their first march in, Elly looked splendid in a bare-back white ball gown, completed by a white floral hairpiece and a crystal bouquet that she made herself. In the second march, the bride looked like a Hollywood star walking the red carpet in her red velvet dress with a sweetheart neckline, a remarkable contrast to the affably goofy look of the groom who put on an afro wig on top of his grey suit.
Helping the couple to get the mood that they want was Mirage Flowers wedding decorators. For the décor for the wedding banquet, the couple chose the Garden of Love theme, which has a mixed shades of pink, cream and gold, and used fuchsia and cream roses, pink eustomas and baby’s breath. The bride also showed her creative flair by DIY-ing some additional décor, such as the photo props, photocards hanging on willow branches, and a dessert table of assorted sweets, all within the color theme of the wedding.
One of the great experiences the couple had as part of their wedding was their pre-wedding photoshoot, which was shot by Skyy Woo. For the photoshoot, the couple went to various locations in the country’s East side, including Tanjong Pagar, The Coastal Settlement restaurant, Tenah Merah, and Marina Barrage.
As for their wedding, all the guests enjoyed what Elly and Manfred have prepared, especially the marvelous food (courtesy of Meritus Mandarin Orchard Singapore) and the couple’s rockin’ second march-in. Everyone spent the night laughing and dancing, and went home giving the couple their love and best wishes.
Elly and Manfred’s second march-in was indeed such a roaring success that the couple says it’s the defining moment of their wedding. More than entertaining their guests, the mix of fashion and antics, paired with an ’80s rock music was a fulfilment of Manfred’s wish to be a rock star and Elly’s appreciation for retro melodies.
“Looking back at the video of our guests laughing and clapping along with the music,” Elly says, “I know that our plan was a success!”
