can i juz ask ah, what is the "reasonable" amount for the dowry? shud it be my HTB tt "tells" his family or wat? how to go abt this? this one quite sensitive lor...

i don't think there is really a fixed amount of pin4 jin1, if that is what you're referring to. Also, what happens is that the groom's family brings over a huge angbao with the dowry, then then bride's family secretly takes a portion of it, then returns the rest of it in the angbao to the groom's family. What i mean is that the value can be 10,000, but the bride's family keeps only 50 also can (of course they can choose to take 9999 too!). but when people ask about the dowry amount, it's not the amt that the bride keeps in the end, but the initial amount in the angbao. so it is kind of a measure of the 'value' of the bride.. a bigger amt is better.. if you're worried your parents take too much, you can secretly tell them not to lah. don't think will take too much, coz scared the in-laws say they're greedy. usually just keep a token amount. =P

10,000?? wah...that will mean the in-laws will need to prepare that amount beforehand leh!

I think there really is no fixed amount when it come to dowry. It's all up to you.
