    We used vinyl clip tiles (comes in various texture) to lay over the existing flooring and save on hacking $$. These are supposedly better than laminate flooring.

    There are wood flooring available in your home depot. Try bamboo or other wood flooring it is great for small or big home. I also love using plywood and stain it to look like a real wooden floor.
