There is a growing trend for whimsical wedding themes, mostly inspired by the popular children’s story Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland. Set in a quirky and surreal Victorian period, the story has naturally captured the fancy of couples with a sense of humour and a love for the vintage.
If you are interested in this wedding theme, here are the items that will come handy when decorating your wedding venue:
Imbue a sense of wonder by making floating items a little more exaggerated in terms of size. Create a cascade of tissue paper using complementing colours, cut them into strips and secure it on the string attached to the balloon. This will make the balloons stand on their own.
Look for downloadable print decors inspired by Wonderland characters. Some of the items you might find are vintage cupcake toppers and table numbers with the Mad Hatter, the white rabbit and Alice printed on it. There are also vintage flags printed with words and phrases from the story, such as “Drink Me!”, “Eat Me!”, “We’re All Mad Here!” and more. Just pick the kind of paper, skewer sticks, cardstocks and ribbons where you’d like these items printed.
Printable vintage-inspired wedding invitation sets – consisting of wedding invitations, save-the-date cards, and RSVP cards – can also be downloaded online. Evoke a sense of fantasy with invitations designed with vibrant colours and patterns, as well as whimsical letterings styles and graphics.
Add charm and fun to your beverages by using paper straws with a print of icons found in playing cards such as heart, diamond and spade. Mix the assortment with blue and red-striped straw beverages, with vintage “Drink Me” flag attached to it.
Design your direction signs with phrase such as: “This way to the Mad Hatter’s party.” Print it on stained paper using vintage fonts that you can download online.
Use old skeleton keys with your guests’ names and seating assignment attached to it. Lay it out in a vintage collection box, and let guests pick out their key. You can also make this your wedding favour.
Print and assemble giant cards with popular characters in the story printed on each card. You can hang the cards on a wall as part of the wedding décor.
Create your own tablescape by mixing and matching different colours, themes and designs of tableware. For instance, you can adorn your dining table with sparkling silver cutlery and fine china tea cups and saucers. Make it look more palatable by adding pastel coloured French macaroons, and topping it with a paper card that exclaims “Eat Me!”
If you like the idea of having a full-blown wedding theme, remember that some guests may not relate to it. Some may even get confused with your chosen theme. That’s why even if everything about your wedding is your call, try not to get overboard. The more subtle the approach, the more successful a themed wedding will become.
