2011 was a lively year in the celebrity world – affairs and personalities were exposed, and more than a few had a meltdown – and the weddings between the rich and famous were just as colorful. From Gene Simmons finally tying the knot to the surprise union of Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz to the fairytale wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William, we present you the seven weddings that made the biggest headlines in 2011.
The Royal Wedding
More than any other wedding last year (and perhaps of this decade), the wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, to the plebian Catherine Middleton was the most anticipated and widely followed. The wedding, held on the 29th of April, was broadcasted live on all media in up to 180 countries, and is considered the sixth biggest event in Internet history. In the U.K., the event was highly celebrated and was considered a public holiday.
The Dream Wedding
When you’re the daughter of a Formula One billionaire, you don’t go for just any wedding, you make it as big and fabulous as you can. So when Petra Ecclestone married James Stunt, they rounded the wedding cost at no less than £5 million. The couple spent £80,000 for the bride’s Vera Wang-designed gown, treated guests to vintage wine and champagne, and hired Andrea Bocelli, Eric Clapton and the Black Eyed Peas to perform at the wedding.
The Doomed Wedding
Socialite and model Kim Kardashian’s wedding to NBA power forward Kris Humphries was definitely one of the most talked-about weddings in celebrity history not just for it’s extravagance but for the brevity of their marriage. The highly-attended event, which featured three Vera Wang couture dresses, millions worth of diamonds and a 6-ft tall wedding cake, came under great scrutiny after the couple filed for divorce 72 days after the wedding.
The Secret Wedding
When Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz worked together for the horror film Dream House, they made a good couple and were even rumored to be in a real relationship. But nobody really knew how real until the two came out and admitted not only about being together but that they have actually already gotten married. The ceremony was very private, with only the couple’s children (Craig’s daughter and Weisz’ son) witnessing the couple exchange their vows.
The Controversial Wedding
ReAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian’s relationship had been quite controversial from the start (both were still married then) and their wedding was pretty much in the same vein. The two held the ceremony with guests believing that they were only going to an engagement party. But the joke seems to be on Ms. Rimes as some commentators quickly called her a copycat since Eddie and the former Mrs. Cibrian had almost exactly the same wedding 10 years ago.
The Western Style Wedding
How would you like to serve your wedding guests a deer you caught yourself? That’s what country singer Miranda Lambert did when she married fellow hitmaker Blake Shelton at the Don Strange Ranch in Texas on May last year. Miranda, who paired her mother’s wedding dress with Casadei cowboy boots, served her own kill at her reception, which had hunting and fishing decorations. Now that’s one great way to put a stamp on your wedding.
The Rockstar’s Wedding
Nobody expected Gene Simmons would ever get married, but get married he did. The bassist of the classic rock band Kiss had his nuptial with actress and model Shannon Tweed. The two have been together for 28 years, and produced two children, but didn’t formalize their union until October 2011. The wedding ceremony was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles and was covered as part of the reality TV show “Gene Simmons Family Jewels.”
